Objective: The Bureau of Aquaculture is the State Shellfish Authority and part of this responsibility includes routine monitoring of shellfish health in Connecticut waters. Run through the Shellfish Pathology Program, this internship aims to introduce interns to a career in aquatic sciences and applications of laboratory work.
Tasks can include:
- Gain hands-on experience with shellfish handling including collection, processing, and diagnoses.
- Gain hands on experience with histology, including analytical strengths and limitations.

The Bureau’s responsibilities include routine monitoring of water quality and assessing on-land pollution sources for the protection of public health via shoreline sanitary surveys. Run through the Growing Area Program, this internship aims to introduce students to a career in environmental and public health, and regulatory work.
Tasks can include:
- Gain hands-on experience with the regulatory framework of the National Shellfish Sanitation Program that ensures the safety of molluscan shellfish for human consumption.
- Gain hands on experience with aseptic seawater sample collection on vessel from the waters of Long Island Sound.
- Gain hands-on experience with collection of shellfish samples for bacterial and viral monitoring.
- Gain hands on experience with conducting sanitary surveys of the shoreline; identifying potential sources of pollution and evaluating their impacts on shellfish growing areas; evaluating land-use changes; and environmental sample collection.
- Gain hands on experience with plankton sampling for the State’s Hazardous Algal Bloom and Biotoxin monitoring program.
- Acquire knowledge of the classification of shellfish growing areas, and the various activities allowed within the classifications in accordance with the National Shellfish Sanitation Program.

As an intern, you will work closely with the Food Service Director for Thomaston public schools. Students will have the opportunity to contribute to meaningful projects and can choose one or more of the following focus areas:
1) Catering Menu Development
- Revise an existing catering menu.
- Organize recipes and calculate cost-per-person pricing for the menu.
2) Cultural Menu & Digital Messaging
- Develop cultural menu options using standard, credited school nutrition recipes for predetermined Heritage Month celebrations.
- Create digital content for each month highlighting how food relates to the culture and the nutrition benefits of commonly prepared foods.
- Plan and participate in one taste test for a selected cultural celebration menu item.
3) Harvest of the Month Program

Earthplace Environment Education – Westport

Background:
Earthplace is a donor-supported, non-profit organization committed to building passion and respect for the natural world and promoting sustainable actions that protect our environment. We guide visitors and students through an educational journey using our unique assets: 62-acre nature sanctuary, live animal exhibits, ecosystem exhibits and nature & environmental-based science programs.
Key tasks and responsibilities
- Conducting field work in rivers.
- Driving field sites and processing bacteria samples in the laboratory.
- Being a deckhand on a research vessel.
- Working with younger students
- Identifying aquatic species.
- Training for all of these tasks is provided at the beginning of the internship.
Required prior experience or relevant interests
No prior experience required! Must be comfortable spending time on a boat for up to 5 hours at a time, even if they don’t have boating experience. Some basic lab experience is a plus. Relevant interests include water quality, environmental research, aquatic species, environmental cleanups, data analysis, and ecology.

Title: Environmental Education Internship

Internship Assignment:
Learn to prepare and deliver environmental lesson plans for visiting student groups, and to devise programming using inquiry-based teaching and information-sharing. Additional assignments may include after-school programming, or weekend/evening adult and family programming, depending on intern’s availability and interests. Intern will also learn to design and construct fun, dynamic exhibits and interpretive signage for all audiences.
Purpose:
The Department of Nature Education and Conservation develops inquiry-based school curriculum that meets Next Generation Science Standards and the needs of local communities. This department also oversees an indoor museum and play area, the demonstration gardens, and the Animal Hall. The Environmental Education Intern helps implement curriculum and create interpretive signage while gaining hands-on experience and developing their leadership style in the field of environmental education.
Roles of the Intern:
- Prepare for upcoming programs by reviewing lesson plans and asking questions for any needed clarification;
- Train in program delivery:
- Shadow naturalists during program delivery;
- Assist naturalists in program delivery;
- Lead at least one program under the guidance of an experienced naturalist.
- Share in responsibilities of materials preparation and maintenance:
- Keep supply room organized and supplies clean;
- Water teaching gardens;
- Maintain exhibits and public learning spaces.
- Learn to design a lesson plan;
- Determine target audience, goals, learning objectives, materials needed, lesson length and development, and topic.
- Review the current exhibits and determine their targeted audience;
- Work with a naturalist to create a new exhibit.

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute

Objective: OLLI at UConn is a member-driven lifelong learning program offering courses, lectures, and special events for people 50+ who want to engage socially and intellectually.
The OLLI community garden is located at Fulton Park in Waterbury. Now in its 13th season, it grows at least 5,000 pounds of produce per year. All produce is donated to food banks and pantries in the Greater Waterbury area to support the needs of food-insecure clients. The garden is managed and maintained by OLLI volunteers with general oversight from the OLLI Director. Its work is partially funded by the Connecticut Community Foundation.
The objective of the internship is to provide a comprehensive experience of planning coordinating all aspects of urban farming during the growing season. Interns will work with the leadership team to develop a thorough understanding of planting, harvesting, maintenance, and coordination of the project. They will also connect with other community organizations, such as the food pantries the garden serves, including UConn Waterbury’s Husky Harvest.
Tasks will include:
- Participate actively in the day-to-day activities of our urban garden, including maintenance, planting, growth, harvesting, and distribution.
- Gain understanding of additional and necessary tasks such as communication, funding, and outreach and relationship-building with local stakeholders.

Position Title: Student Growth through Gardens Internship

Project Details: Compassionate Gardens projects aim to achieve two overarching goals: (1) Increase access to and availability of local, nutritious produce in the underserved East Las Vegas community. (2)Increase community engagement in gardening and nutrition education opportunities.
The Compassionate Gardens Data project is a pilot initiative for supporting data collection and analysis efforts for the ongoing Compassionate Gardens projects hosted at Green Our Planet Headquarters. Data types involved in the projects can include but are not limited to: community demographics, community interest levels and feedback, workshop effectiveness ratings, amount of produce distributed to community members, garden production and quality, dietary habit and other behavioral change indicators.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the ongoing collection and evaluation of growth and impact metrics for Compassionate Gardens projects.
- Distribute and analyze Community Planning Survey data and Community Workshop Survey data.
- Develop data visualizations for reports, proposals, presentations related to impact data findings.
- Communicate and present key data insights including trends and patterns that will support improvement plans and inform future decisions.
Preferred Skills & Qualifications
- The candidate would ideally have a major in statistics, data science, business analytics, or related field of study. Alternatively the candidate has a major in nutrition science, agriculture, or related field of study with strong analytical and/or research skills.
- Must possess a strong desire to make a difference in the lives of others through applied indoor and outdoor garden labs.
- Experience with survey-based research as it relates to creating, collecting and analyzing survey response data.
- Experience with STEM and/or agriculture education is a plus.

Title: College Intern – Operations / Greenhouse Production

Basic Functions: The Operations Intern will support daily greenhouse and farm operations while gaining hands-on experience in hydroponic food production. This internship is designed for college students interested in agriculture, sustainability, plant science, environmental studies, or related fields. The intern will assist with planting, transplanting, harvesting, packing, and storage of leafy greens and other crops under the guidance of the Lead Grower. Teamwork, curiosity, and a willingness to learn are essential. A strong focus will be placed on maintaining a clean, safe, and pest-free growing environment.
Responsibilities
- Assist the Lead Grower with preparation, seeding, and maintenance of propagation trays and growing channels.
- Support daily greenhouse operations, including planting, transplanting, harvesting, labeling, and packing produce.
- Help record and maintain basic plant growth and production data.
- Inspect plants for quality and report concerns or irregularities to the Lead Grower.
- Observe greenhouse conditions (temperature, humidity, irrigation systems)
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment at all times.
- Support quality control efforts throughout the growing cycle.
- Follow all company policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
- Attend team meetings and contribute to discussions as appropriate.
- Learn best practices for IPM

The Henry J. and Erna D. Leir Global Internship Embark on a transformative journey and build your future in the field of Human-Animal Interaction (HAI) with The Henry J. and Erna D. Leir Global Internship Program at The Sam and Myra Ross Institute. This unique immersion experience offers individuals the opportunity to explore the human-animal bond and engage in nature-based activities that benefit children with special needs. Interns can select from four different positions within the organization based on their personal interests and the skills they wish to enhance and develop. This hands-on opportunity takes place in Green Chimneys' enriched and supportive environment, where students receive individualized therapeutic education and clinical services. Objectives:
As part of the College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources, UConn Extension fulfills the university’s land-grant mission of bringing research-based information to the public through educational programs and initiatives. The UConn Extension One Health program focuses on enhancing integrated health outcomes in agricultural and public contexts, including zoonotic and vector-borne disease prevention, farm biosecurity, and extreme weather preparedness. The primary goal of this internship is to provide hands-on experience in extension programming related to One Health, a global framework for advancing human, animal, and environmental wellbeing. Specifically, the intern will have opportunities to develop and strengthen proficiencies in oral and written communication, gain experience in extension program implementation to support One Health knowledge and behavior change amongst community audiences, and expand their professional portfolio by collaborating on fact sheets, workshop presentations, and other extension resources.
Tasks:
Primary internship tasks include:
- Contribute to fact sheet and educational resource development, including summarizing sources and supporting content composition
- Contribute to workshop presentation development and delivery
- Contribute to the design of educational signage, displays, and infographics
- Support program implementation, such as tables at agricultural fairs or listening sessions to refine materials with the UConn Extension Educator for One Health

Relevant Experience:
This internship is an opportunity for students to develop proficiencies in science communication and community engagement. The ideal candidate for this position has experience in animal science, pathobiology, or One Health (or is open to learning) with demonstrated oral and written communication skills. In addition to strong organization skills, candidates must demonstrate the ability to work independently and in team settings. Position Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented, curious, and systems-minded Development Operations Intern to support our growing development team. This internship is designed to provide a holistic view of nonprofit development, combining backend operations, grants support, donor stewardship, and exposure to event-based fundraising.
The intern will work closely with our Development Operations (DevOps) Associate, collaborate with our Grants Manager, and partner directly with the Director of Development on select projects. While the role is primarily remote, the intern will also provide on-site support for our annual gala in Stamford, Connecticut in May, offering hands-on experience with event planning and execution.
This role is ideal for someone interested in nonprofit fundraising, systems, and strategy, and who wants to understand how data, grants, donors, and events work together to advance mission impact.

Objectives:
This internship offers a unique opportunity to explore the multifaceted topic of aging
through training and community service. Student Volunteers will gain hands-on experience
in community outreach, program support, and the development of public education
initiatives focused on Medicare beneficiaries and their caregivers. Through completion of
nationally recognized training modules, Student Volunteers will build foundational
knowledge in Medicare, fraud prevention, elder justice, and aging services.
Tasks and Learning Opportunities:
- Completing nationally recognized training courses covering Medicare basics and
SMP specific topics.
- Providing program support and engaging with community members at SMP outreach events
- Designing and delivering an SMP presentation and/or assisting in planning and
- managing a community outreach event
- Receiving introductory training towards becoming a nationally certified SHIP (State
- Health Insurance Assistance Program) Counselor
- Training time will count toward total volunteer hours.
Qualification and Desired Skills:

- Physical Therapy: A healthcare specialty that uses exercise, manual
therapy, and movement-based interventions to reduce pain, improve mobility, and
restore functional movement. Students will have the opportunity to participate in paid
shadowing hours under a licensed Physical Therapist. These hours will allow
observation of the evaluation, treatment and management of patients in the outpatient
setting.
- Occupational Therapy: A healthcare profession that helps people
across the lifespan participate in the daily activities they want and need to do, such as
dressing, working, or playing. It uses personalized, therapeutic approaches to help
individuals overcome physical, mental, or social limitations to improve their
independence, health, and quality of life. Students will have the opportunity to
participate in paid shadowing hours under a licensed Occupational Therapist. These
hours will allow observation of the evaluation, treatment and management of patients in
the outpatient setting.
- Speech Therapy: A healthcare profession performing diagnosis and
treatment of communication, language, voice, and swallowing disorders in children and
adults. It utilizes specialized exercises to improve speech clarity, language
comprehension, social communication, and oral-motor functions, often addressing
issues stemming from developmental delays, stroke, or brain injury. Students will have
the opportunity to participate in paid shadowing hours under a licensed
Speech-Language Pathologist. These hours will allow observation of the evaluation,
treatment and management of patients in this field.
